Wellness isn’t a Catch Phrase
I was on the bench for over 16 years and one thing I did not hear in most of those years was the thought of wellness in the legal field, much less the judiciary. I remember seeing a mindfulness class for judges on the National Judicial College’s website and thinking, there is no way our court is going to fund me to go to Sedona, Arizona to learn more about mindfulness. At the time, I was still on the bench yet involved in creating a peer to peer coaching resource for our NM judges, and after brining that piece to my request, I was apporved to go. I remember showing up wondering who would actually be there, since you do not hear judges discussing wellness or mindfulness . It was powerful to show up and meet a full room of judges around the nation who knew that they too wanted to find a different way of doing things in their career.
Since then, I have worked with many judges and attorneys on how to bring wellness into their lives, through executive coaching, roundtables, teaching mindfulness , and sharing supportive strategies on how we take care of ourselves in these important careers.
I don’t think of it as a catchphrase as I use to, but see it as a living, breathing way of life that more and more are embracing.
